Incompetence all around...

Good Lord! Everyone was screwed up in this Katrina/Rita mess. Yesterday they said Bush and his Homeland Security Chief both knew about possible levee issues with the hurricane. They ignored the warnings from the experts. Today they have video of the Governor of Louisiana telling the White House that the levees were fine.

I guess that this was true at first. It took a day for the breech that drowned ST Bernard Parish to occur. The other breeches happened about a day after that. In a sense many residents of New Orleans probably got a false sense of security because there were no immediate problems in that area. The biggest problem that I saw was the incompetence of the leadership (The Whole Leadership from Local to Federal.) No one was prepared. Plans were not followed and people willingly put themselves in a fairytale frame of mind that said this hasn't ever happened so it probably won't.

Why didn't the local governments evacuate the residents? Why didn't the residents evacuate? Why didn't the Governor issue a mandatory Evacuation Order until the hurricane was almost on top of New Orleans? Why, if Governor Blanco (AKA Governor Blank Stare) knew she couldn't handle the problem, didn't she cede control of the National Guard troops to the Federal Government? Why didn't FEMA respond quicker? Why did they turn rescuers away when they showed up with boats and equipment, ready and willing to start pulling people out? (yes, they did in fact stop people from putting their boats in the water and helping the locals.)

None of it makes sense. We are looking to blame someone. I think everyone is too blame. Now that that's done, let's fix the problem so that it doesn't happen again.
